How to Create a Skool Community (Step-by-Step)

This is the walkthrough we wish someone had given us when we started. It covers the boring technical setup fast, then focuses on the parts that actually determine whether your community will work.

Step 1 — Nail the positioning
Before you touch the platform, write a single sentence in this form: "A community for [specific person] who wants [specific outcome] via [your approach]."
The narrower the better. "Freelance designers who want their first retainer client using Twitter" beats "creatives who want to grow." Vague positioning is the number one reason communities die.
Step 2 — Create the community
- Sign up for a Skool creator account. You'll get a free trial to start; check current terms on skool.com.
- Choose a name that describes the outcome, not the platform. "Retainer Ready" is better than "Design Freelancers Group."
- Set your community to private by default. You want intentionality, not walk-ins.
- Write a two-line About section that mirrors your positioning sentence.
- Upload a simple square logo and a plain wordmark cover image. Members don't care; save your energy for content.
Step 3 — Set up the classroom and calendar
Create one classroom module called "Start Here." Include:
- A 2-minute welcome video (phone camera is fine).
- A "How this community works" text lesson.
- An "Introduce yourself" post link.
Resist the urge to pre-build a huge curriculum. Members won't watch it, and you'll spend two weeks on video editing instead of talking to humans.
Add one recurring event to the calendar — a weekly office-hours call. A predictable weekly rhythm is worth more than any lesson.
Step 4 — Design your weekly rituals
Rituals are what make a community feel alive. Pick two:
- Monday intentions — every member posts one goal for the week.
- Wednesday teardown — you review one member's work publicly.
- Friday wins — everyone shares what they shipped.
- Sunday synthesis — you post the best thread of the week.
Two is enough. Four is too many. The ritual only works if it happens every single week without fail.
Step 5 — Invite your first ten members
Do not launch publicly yet. Personally message ten people who fit your positioning sentence exactly. Say:
- Why you're building this.
- Why you thought of them specifically.
- That it's free for the first cohort.
- That you'd like their honest feedback.
Aim for ten yeses. Keep it that small for at least two weeks. This is where you find out whether your positioning actually resonates.
Step 6 — Public launch
After two solid weeks of active discussion with your ten members, switch on paid membership (if that's the plan) and post publicly to your existing audience. Include screenshots of real threads from the first cohort — social proof beats promises.
Cap the first paid cohort at 25–50 people. Scarcity is real, and you want to keep the intimacy that made the first two weeks work.
